You Oughtta Be On Stickers

Hungry to know about the best books for kids? Tired of seeing lame books win the big awards? Then step right up to see the Cybil Awards! That's right -- a brand-spankin' new youth literature award that is headed up by the childlit blogging community. And guess who gets to be on one of the awards committees? Me! Woo-hoo! I get to be on the judging committee for Middle Grade Fiction. ("Cybil Awards" is taken from what happens if you say "
Children's and YA Bloggers' Literary Awards" fast. Really, really fast. And maybe drunk. I likes it.)

Hmm . . . when I see it in writing, "committee member of obscure cyber-award" doesn't sound so hot. But it feels hot. I'm very excited, even if it means that I'll actually have to get around to reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Who wants to read about a bunny named after a university? But I digress.

The real question, I suppose, is what kind of shiny gold-foil sticker we would create, if we had the money and/or general clout and public interest to do so. The problem is that I can't envision one that doesn't feature the giant embossed head of Cybil Shepherd. Errrgh! Stupid, lame Moonlighting -- ruining my imagination forever!

Anyhow, if any of you guys out there in L'Internet Land have any brilliant ideas for a Cybil Sticker (oooh, say that ten times fast), write it up in the comments. I'll take the idea I like the best and draw it, then post it here for all to see. Then everybody can rejoice in mocking my drawing skills forevermore.

Go ahead and think about it: what would best represent the children's book award of the 21st century?

I don't know why, but I see the word Cybil and I can't help but imagine something modern art-ish. Something cubist like Picasso, or abstract like Miro or Klee. Doesn't have a dang thing to do with blogging, the award or what it honors, but it sounds like it would be a cool looking medalion on a book. And just to be different, how about in a red foil color.

Howzabout a picture of Pooh done entirely in ones and zeros? Or maybe another classic children's book image. Alice from Alice In Wonderland? A flying monkey? The mind boggles.

Oooh, you're officially an expert! For a medallion, you could create a "Cybil" character who is a personification of the award, kind of like Marianne, the personification of France. Although, the impulse to make her look like Cybil Shepherd would probably be too hard to resist.

Hmm . . . so, we could please everybody and have a Cubist rendering of a Cybil cartoon character wearing a Pooh t-shirt . . . rendered entirely in ASCII! And on holographic foil! Not only would it be the most unique book award sticker in history, but it could also be used to instantly blind any of our foes!

Keep up the good work folks -- any other ideas floating out there?

No ideas for Cybil, but so, by now, have you read Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane yet? I read it last week, just before I saw your post, and LOVED it. I don't know if it's the post pregnancy hormones, or what, but I sobbed at the end of it. I think it's a fun and sweet story. Definitely worth an obscure on-line award.

I actually thought of Cybil Shepherd when I first read the name. I'm glad you explained where it actually came from.
